Information:
We are thrilled to be holding musical theatre camps this summer at our Prelude Music Location! The camps will be run by our amazing teacher Sarah Schellenberg who is currently finishing her bachelor of music at University of Manitoba. Sarah has run many musical theatre camps and has also performed in a variety of shows herself. She combines all her knowledge of theatre, music and drama, to put on a wonderful fun camp!
Each week the students will learn a full musical, get to study characters, singing and the behind the scene look of what it takes to put on a show but creating the props and costumes themselves! At the end of the week we will have a performance on Friday from 3:45 -4:15 so you can see their hard work and what kids are capable of in only a week (limited spectator space).
Musical Plots:
1) I Heart Broadway: One kid – or several – have dreams of being stars on Broadway. (On Broadway.) Everybody tells them it will never happen. (When I Grow Up). Another group of cast members absolutely do not want to grow up. (I Won’t Grow Up). The dreamers friends encourage them to have the courage to chase their dreams. (The dreamers have grave doubts about whether they are good enough; they have their tap shoes, their dance clothes, their greasepaint, etc, but they are missing one thing. (You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile.) They finally reach Broadway and all of the folks who are already there welcome them to the Broadway family. (Consider Yourself). They realize that they may not immediately get to be a Broadway star, but they are here in this magical place, a place where everyone has a role. This is what Broadway is all about. When the world catches up to Broadway, the world could be as beautiful as a Broadway show. (Brand New Day!)
2) “What a Wonderful World” is a heartwarming musical revue that takes audiences on a joyous journey through the power of music and imagination. Featuring beloved songs like “What a Wonderful World,” “On My Way” from Disney’s Brother Bear, “Pure Imagination” from Wonka!, “The Rainbow Connection” from the Muppet Movie, and “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” from Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story, this enchanting collection celebrates the beauty of life, friendship, and hope. Each song uplifts the spirit, reminding us that through challenges and adventures, the world is filled with wonder and possibility. Join us for a delightful experience that will have you singing, reminiscing, and believing in the magic all around us!
3) “The Best Pet Show Ever!” is a 15-20 minute musical. The setting is a pet show. The children introduce their pets and tell why their pets are the best. The musical includes songs about cats, dogs, bunnies, and responsible pet ownership.
Musical Minds is a music group designed specifically for neurodivergent kids ages ~10-12. Through music, movement, and creative expression, the group provides a supportive space where children can develop self-regulation, communication, social interaction, and self-esteem skills.
Running weekly for 8 weeks this summer if you would like to sign up for more than one day a week let us know and we can make that work.
Led by a Board-Certified Music Therapist, the group offers a range of fun and engaging activities, including:
- Group music-making: Playing instruments together to encourage teamwork and attention skills.
- Movement and dance: Using music to express emotions and provide opportunities for regulation.
- Cool-down techniques: Learning strategies to help manage emotions.
- Musical adaptations: Changing the lyrics to familiar songs or using creative methods like rolling dice to create melodies, allowing kids to explore their creativity in a playful way.
Each session is tailored to meet the unique needs of each participant, ensuring that every child is supported in a way that resonates with them. Whether it’s building confidence, learning new musical skills, or simply having fun,
Musical Minds offers a unique opportunity for neurodivergent children to connect with themselves and others through the power of music!
